Jack passed in 2000, and among the things he left us was a small box containing every letter he had written and received while away from home. Every letter he wrote home mentioned what a boost to morale it was to get a piece of mail and hear from “back home.”
With Jack’s letters in mind, my wife and daughters and I “adopted” three soldiers in Iraq and began sending things – snacks, socks, CD’s, canned goods, and even boots – when we could.
Once we started receiving e-mail and regular mail responses from these troops, we were hooked. We continued our support as a family, but in 2007, when friends and clients wanted to help, we decided to take things up a notch and The Back Home Box Foundation was founded.
If not for the hard work of many supporters and local businesses, my family and I would still be sending a few boxes a month from our garage.
With the help of those friends and businesses, the Foundation has been able to send just over 4,000 boxes since the fall of 2007.
We would love to have you join us in supporting these brave men and women.
Our Inspiration
I’m PJ…Founder of the BHBF…and here’s how it started. My father-in-law was Jack Moore, who as a skinny 18 year old Chatham County farm boy joined the Navy in 1942 and wound up in 1944-45 flying off the carrier USS Randolph in the rear seat of an SB2C.
